Bassett and Payne Named MIAA Track & Field Athletes of the Week

ANGOLA, IND.  --  Juniors Jacob Payne (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) and Jasper Bassett (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) swept the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's track and field "Athletes of the Week."

Payne garnered "Field Athlete of the Week" honors after finishing fourth in the pole vault at the Mike Lints Alumni Meet hosted by Grand Valley State University clearing the bar in a Trine school record height of 15' 11.00" (4.85 meters) to place fourth and surpassed the previous Trine all-time mark of 15' 1.00" that was held by John Daniel set back during the 2014-15 indoor season.

Payne's mark tied him for the 10th best in all of NCAA Division III so far this season.

Bassett placed third among collegiate competitors in the 400m dash (fourth overall) with a time of 49.27 seconds.  His time, converted for track measurements, ranks first in the MIAA this season.  Bassett's time also is the 16th fastest to date in Division III.

Trine will host the two-day Don and Riley Zimmer Indoor Classic on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 2-3.  The meet on Friday is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
