Men's Track & Field Places Second at Open Meet

ANGOLA, IND.  -- Seniors Jasper Bassett (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) and Jonathan Phillips (Royal Center, Ind./Pioneer) both won events to lead the Trine University men's track & field team to a second-place finish at the Sean Brady/Keith Turner Alumi Open at the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center in Angola, Ind.

The Thunder finished with a combined team score of 116 points to place second of five teams.  Indiana Tech won the team title with 241.66 points and Grace College was third at 67.33 points.

Bassett led all runners in the 800-meter run with a top and season-best time of 2:00.70 to record one of Trine's two event victories on the day.

In the 5000-meter run, sophomore Alex Amaro (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) led a small field with a winning mark of 16:59.93.  Fellow sophomore Harrison Korkos (Rochester, Ind./Rochester) also competed in the event and placed second behind Amaro with a time of 17:01.05.  

Sophomore Noah Acker (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) was one of two Trine runners to place in the top-three in the one-mile run and crossed the finish line in a time of 4:37.2 which was good enough for second place.  Teammate Neil O'Brien (Whiteland, Ind./Roncalli) finished third in the event with a time of 4:42.36.

Trine had a standout effort in the 3000-meter run with five competitors finishing in the top-10, including the event winner, and four of those runners completing the race in under nine minutes.  Phillips recorded the top overall time in the race of 8:49.47.  He was followed by sophomore Derek Miller (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) who placed third in a time of 8:55.03.  Sophomore Jack Beakas (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) and junior Vilis Vuskalns (Indianapolis, Ind./Beech Grove) finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth place with times of 8;57.83 and 8:58.29, respectively.  Sophomore Levi Neuzerling (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) rounded out the top-10 times at 9:23.49 and was eighth overall.

In the sprints, senior Jeffery Barnett (Fremont, Ohio/Ross) had the top mark of the day in the 200-meter dash by finishing fifth overall in a time of 22.95 seconds.

The field events were highlighted by a pair of second-place finishes by junior Skyler Dunckley (Cedar, Mich./Traverse City West) and senior Nick Gerber (Goshen, Ind./Goshen).  Dunckley finished second in the shot put with a distance of 46' 4.75" and Gerber placed second in the weight throw with a best effort of 51' 7.00"

Barnett also competed in a field event and recorded his second fifth-place finish of the day, this time in the long jump, with a leap of 21' 10.25".

Trine will host the Don & Riley Zimmer Classic next Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center with the first events scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
