Records Fall at GVSU Big Meet

ALLENDALE, MICH.  --  Select members of the Trine University men's indoor track & field team competed at the unscored Grand Valley State (Mich.) University "Big Meet" in Allendale, Mich.

Trine had a pair of school records fall with seniors Jonathan Phillips (Royal Center, Ind./Pioneer) and Nick Zak (Saint John, Ind./Hanover Central) posting record times in the 5000-meter run and the mile run.

Phillips shattered the previous school record with his mark of 14:47.30 which surpassed the previous mark by nearly 40 seconds (15:27.28) which was set by Adam Schaaf during the 2017 season.  His time in the event put him in 24th place in a field of 213 individuals.

Two weeks ago, Zak improved upon his own school record at the GVSU Open (4:17.51).  Back in Allendale, Zak bettered his own school record in the mile run again, this time by a hundreth of a second with a time of 4:17.50 which put him 37th out of 62 competitors.

Two other runners competed for the Thunder in senior Jasper Bassett (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) and sophomore Jack Beakas (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb).

Bassett competed in the 400-meter dash and went up against 40 other runners from all three NCAA Divisions (I, II and III).  He completed the race in a time of 50.52 seconds and placed 31st overall.

Beakas joined Phillips in the field of the 5000-meter event and ran a time of 15:52.45 to place 138th out of 213.
