Thunder Finish Third at Indiana D-III Championships

GREENCASTLE, IND.  --  The Trine University men's outdoor track & field team placed third at the Indiana Division III Championships hosted by DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.

The Thunder finished with 105 points to finish third of nine teams.  Wabash College placed first with 249.5 points and was followed by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with 179 points.  

Highlighting the running events was competition in the 10,000-meter run in which four of the top-five placings, including the top-three spots, were occupied by Trine runners.  Sophomore Derek Miller (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) won the event with a meet-record time of 31:41.69.  Sophomore Jack Beakas (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) and junior Vilis Vuskalns (Indianapolis, Ind./Beech Grove) finished just behind in second and third place after crossing the finish line with marks of 31:58.19 and 32:04.56, respectively.  Sophomore Harrison Korkos (Rochester, Ind./Rochester) rounded out the top finishes in fifth place after running a time of 32:04.56.

Trine also had a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100-meter dash and 1500-meter run.  Freshman Josh Davis (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights) was one of two runners to place in the top five with a second-place effort in a time of 11.05 seconds.  Senior Nick Zak (Saint John, Ind./Hanover Central) clipped the tape in second place in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:56.31.

Junior Jacob Root (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) competed alongside Davis in the 100-meter dash and placed fourth after completing the race in a time of 11.16 seconds.

Sophomore Neil O'Brien (Whiteland, Ind./Roncalli) posted a top-five mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:47.05 which was the third fastest time recorded on the day.

Sophomore Levi Neuzerling (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) competed in the 5000-meter run and posted a mark of 15:21.49 to finish in fourth place overall.

In the field events, senior Jeffery Barnett (Fremont, Ohio/Ross) highlighted the meet for Trine with a first-place showing in the long jump with a leap of 21' 11.75".

The Thunder also had a pair of second-place finishes with senior Jacob Payne (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) finishing as runner-up in the pole vault following a best height of 14' 9.00" and fellow senior Nicholas Gerber (Goshen, Ind./Goshen) placed second in the hammer throw with a heave of 172' 2.00".

Freshman Noah McClellan (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) completed the list of top-five finishes for the Thunder by placing fourth in the triple jump thanks to a leap of 40' 6.75".

Trine is scheduled to travel to Westerville, Ohio to take part in the Otterbein University Invitational on Friday, Apr. 19.
