Men's Track & Field Competes at Gina Relays

HILLSDALE, MICH.  --  The Trine University men's outdoor track and field team competed at the Gina Relays hosted by Hillsdale (Mich.) College in Hillsdale, Mich. and finished 12th overall.

Trine finished with a team score of 20.5 points to place 12th of 27 teams.  

The Thunder had one event winner which came in the field events with senior Nicholas Gerber (Goshen, Ind./Goshen) who posted a winning mark of 174' 10.00" in the open hammer throw event among a field of 39 competitors.  Gerber also competed in the shot put and finished 13th overall after a best toss of 45' 0.25".

Sophomore Nicholas Kane (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) competed alongside Gerber in both the hammer and shot put and placed in the top-15 in both events with marks of 140' 10.00" in the hammer to place 12th and 43' 3.75" in the shot put to finish in a tie for 15th.  Kane recorded a third top-15 finish in the discus and placed 13th overall following a distance of 134' 7.00".

Senior Jeffery Barnett (Fremont, Ohio/Ross) continued his strong performances this season in the long jump with a second-place effort in the open event with a leap of 23' 3.25".

In teh javelin, the Thunder had three individuals place in the top-15, led by freshman Theodore Samra (Lansing, Mich./DeWitt) who recorded a distance of 119' 7.00" which was good enough for 11th place.  Senior Brandon Gay (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and freshman Alex Layman (Sherwood, Ohio/Fairview) finished back-to-back with marks of 117' 7.00" and 116' 10.00" for 13th and 14th places.

Senior Jacob Payne (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) rounded out the top finishes in the field events in the pole vault by placing in a tie for eighth in the open event after clearing a height of 14' 6.00".

In the running events, senior Jasper Bassett (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) had the best individual finish of seventh place in the 400-meter dash after running a time of 50.52 seconds.  

Junior Jacob Root (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) finished just outside the top-10 in the 200-meter dash open after crossing the finish line in a time of 22.57 seconds.

Senior Nick Zak (Saint John, Ind./Hanover Central) recorded a time of 1:57.09 in the 800-meter run which ranked as the 15th fastest mark of the meet.

Trine will next set its sights on the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Outdoor Championship hosted by Hope (Mich.) College beginning on Thursday, May 2 in Holland, Mich.  The day is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
