Day One Action Begins at the MIAA Outdoor Championships

ALBION, Mich. – The Trine University men's track and field team was in action on Thursday for the first of two days in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Outdoor Championships. Some field events had their finals today, as well as the 10,000-meter run, with preliminary times set in sprint events.

The Thunder are in first place with 66 points, and in second is Calvin University with 44.

Theodore Samra [Lansing, Mich. / DeWitt] was able to win the hammer throw at 54.04 meters (177' 3.50"). Behind him was Jacob Barkey [Waterloo, Ind. / DeKalb] in fourth-place with a toss of 48.72 meters (159' 10.00").

In the shot put, Alexander Lewis [LaPorte, Ind. / LaPorte] was the highest Trine finisher with a second-place 14.36 meters (47' 1.25"). Also scoring points for the Thunder were Samra in third (13.66 meters / 44' 9.75") and Travis Dowling [Swayzee, Ind. / Oak Hill] in sixth (12.79 meters / 11.50").

The long jump saw three Trine competitors in the top eight, including Ben Williams [Farmington Hills, Mich. / Harrison] in second (6.98 meters / 22' 10.75"), Ethan Spahr [Osseo, Mich. / Pittsford] in third (6.89 meters / 22' 7.25") and Eirik Eggen [Brownsburg, Ind. / Brownsburg] in seventh (6.55 meters / 21' 5.75").

Dominick Giuditta [Machester, Pa. / Northeastern] was the lone scorer in the pole vault. He was fifth with a height of 3.65 meters / 11' 11.75".

The 10,000-meter run had three point-scorers for the Thunder. Joseph Packard [Kokomo, Ind. / Western] led the way with a second-place time of 32:29.62. Jacob Myers [Kokomo, Ind. / Northwestern] finished fourth with a time of 33:04.35 and Nikolas Pensyl [Westfield, Ind. / Westfield] eighth at 34:12.54.

Preliminary events took place in the 100, 200, 400 and 800-meter dash events as well as the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Those finals will take place on day two, Friday, May 6.
