WEST LAFAYETTE, IND.-- The Trine men's cross country team placed ninth in the Indiana Intercollegiate Championship, held Friday at Purdue University.
Thunder runners accumulated a score of 282 points in the Little State division of the race. Leading the way was Adam Schaaf (Greentown, Ind./Eastern), who placed 12th with a time of 26:44.9 in 8K race. The time was 56 seconds better than Schaaf's effort in his last 8K race this season, which took place two weeks ago. Trine finished four places higher than last season's effort in the Indiana Intercollegiate. Thunder runners averaged a time of 28:09.40 on the course, a full minute better than their previous-best 8K average this season.
Robert Lewis Duke (Greentown, Ind./Eastern) finished second among Thunder runners, coming in 40th with a time of 27:43. Fellow freshman Cody Verhey (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) also turned in a strong performance, finishing in 28:36 to place third among Trine competitors. His time was a 56-second improvement from his previous-best 8K time.
Zachary Phillips (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) continued the theme of improvement, as he bested his last 8K time by 1:43 on his way to a time of 28:49. Rounding out the top five for the Thunder was Sean Brady (Monroe, Mich./Monroe), who came across the finish line in 28:54- 1:15 better than his previous-best 8K this season.
All five Trine runners earning points towards the team score are underclassmen. All eight Thunder runners competing in the championship race are underclassmen. A total of 150 runners representing 20 schools competed in the Little States division of the race.

The next race for Trine will be Sep. 27, when they travel to Kalamazoo for the MIAA Jamboree.
