Thunder Place Fourth in MIAA Championships

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.-- Trine placed fourth in the MIAA Championships Saturday at Calvin College to earn the Thunder their highest finish in the conference in seven years.

The fourth-place finish in the MIAA is the highest for Trine since the team placed second in 2007. Adam Schaaf (Greentown, Ind./Eastern) earned First-Team All-MIAA honors with a seventh-place finish in the Championship race. The sophomore turned in a season-best time of 26:01, beating his personal-best by 15 seconds. Schaaf becomes Trine's first All-MIAA performer in six years. Thunder runners earned 131 points in the event. Led by three top-10 performances, Calvin won the MIAA title with 42 points.

Lewis Duke (Greentown, Ind./Eastern) finished second among Trine runners and 22nd overall with a time of 26:33. The time was a new personal-best for the freshman.

Sean Brady (Monroe, Mich./Monroe), Garrett Benedict (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) and Collin Elek (Osceola, Ind./Penn) finished with points 33-35 for the Thunder. Brady finished in 27:31, while Benedict came in just behind with a season-best time of 27:32. Elek's time of 27:35 was a personal-best.

Schaaf's All-MIAA selection is the latest honor in what has been a solid season for the sophomore. Schaaf also earned MIAA Runner of the Week honors for his performance in the Small States Division of the Indiana Intercollegiate. He has been Trine's top individual runner in every traditional race this season, and made up part of the team's top pairing in the Manchester University Hokum Karem.

The Thunder will compete in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional next Saturday, Nov. 15 in Wilmington, Ohio.
