Men's Cross Country Places 11th in Louisville Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Trine men's cross country team placed 11th in the 2016 Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic, held Saturday at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park. 

Thunder runners combined to earn 346 points in a field of 43 NCAA Division III teams. Trine competed in the Silver Division, which served as a pre-nationals meet for Division III competitors in one of the largest cross country races in the nation. Trine's runners combined to average a time of 26:39.20 on the 8K course.

Leading the way once again was senior Adam Schaaf (Greentown, Ind. / Eastern), who placed 43rd overall and earned the Thunder 39 points with his performance. Schaaf crossed the finish line in 26:04.17, third-best among runners from MIAA teams competing in the event. 

Lewis Duke (Greentown, Ind. / Eastern) turned in another strong performance, placing 57th with a time of 26:20.97. Duke's time was a career-best in the 8K. His efforts earned the team 52 points in the standings. 

Kody Snyder (Burnettsville, Ind. / Twin Lakes) and Aaron Mast (Ligonier, Ind. / West Noble) followed by finishing third and fourth among Trine runners. Snyder placed 87th, earning the team 77 points with a time of 26:50.52. Mast finished just behind with a time of 26:55.43, good enough for 95th overall and 83 points. 

Rounding out Trine's top five was Jonathan Phillips (Royal Center, Ind. / Pioneer). The sophomore ran a time of 27:04.88, a career-best time in the 8K. Phillips personal-best performance placed him 107th overall and picked up 95 points for the Thunder.

Trine returns to action Saturday, Oct. 15 in the Inter-Regional Rumble at Oberlin College. The race will be the team's final tune-up before the MIAA Cross Country Championships.
