Thunder Bats Explode in Sweep of Calvin

ANGOLA, Ind.-- Trine pounded out 41 hits in just 10 innings of play as the Thunder swept Calvin with a pair of victories in MIAA-action Tuesday evening at SportONE/Parkview Softball Field.

The Thunder launched seven home runs and rapped out 15 extra-base hits in the sweep. Trine took game one by a 29-0 final, which marked the highest scoring output for a Thunder team since a 34-run effort against Olivet in 2013. Trine went on to earn a 12-4 victory in game two. Kaylee Fox (Vermilion, Ohio/Edison) and Jamie Schnarr (Kettering, Ohio/Kettering) each homered twice to help pace the offensive charge. Fox has now homered six times in the last five games and leads the team with seven homers on the year. Schnarr drove in a team-high six runs and extended her career-best hitting streak to 11 games. Trine is now 23-2 overall, 7-1 in the MIAA. Calvin falls to 7-15 overall, 2-6 in league play.

Game One: Trine 29, Calvin 0

The Thunder scored 27 runs in the contest with two outs as they cruised to the game one victory.

Trine crushed five home runs in the game and racked up 26 hits. Fox, Schnarr, Rachell Noble (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central), Kendra Marshall (Leesburg, Ind./Warsaw) and Emily McCarty (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) all homered in the game. Schnarr and McCarty each hit grand slams. McCarty's homer was the first of her Thunder career.

Marshall's homer was her first of the season. The junior third baseman extended her hitting-streak to eight in the doubleheader. Noble added her second homer of the year. The freshman has drive in 13 runs in 12 games.

Schnarr knocked in five runs to pace all Thunder players, while Noble and McCarty each drove in four runs. Twelve different Trine players drove in runs and 16 players got in the hit column.

Erica Robles (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood), Cassidey Carraway (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay), Rachel Zink (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) and Emily White (Fortville, Ind./Mount Vernon) each picked up their first collegiate hit.

Justine Robles (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood) earned the victory with four shutout innings. The junior allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out eight.

Game Two: Trine 12, Calvin 4

The Thunder scored in all but the first inning as they ran away with the game two victory.

Lydia Gildea gave the Knights and early lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI-double to score Ashley Riemersma.

Schnarr hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the second before Trine continued with the success with two outs. Catherine Porter (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Canton) and Carly Searles (Levering, Mich./Petoskey) knocked in runs with two outs to give the Thunder a 3-1 lead.

The Thunder would add three more in the third and two in the fourth. Schnarr was once again in the middle of both rallies with a sac fly in the third and an RBI-double in the fourth.

The Knights came back with three runs in their half of the fourth before Fox and Schnarr went back-to-back with home runs in the fifth to help seal the victory. Fox went opposite field for her final homer of the day, while Schnarr followed with a no-doubter to center for the final margin.

Calvin rallied to try to extend the game to the sixth, but Searles cut down the final out at the plate with a strong throw from center.

Kaitlyn Clark (Mount Juliet, Tenn./Wilson Central) extended her hitting-streak to 12 in the doubleheader. Clark is batting .476 over that span.

Trine returns to action Thursday at DePauw, when the two teams will resume play of a game that was halted earlier this season due to darkness. The Thunder hold a 13-4 lead in the top of the fifth. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
