KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- No. 10 Trine picked up a pair of wins to remain unbeaten Friday afternoon in the Rebel Spring Games at Oren Brown Park.
The Thunder used a Kaylee Fox (Vermilion, Ohio / Edison) two-run homer to prevail in a 2-1 pitcher's duel in game one against Carroll (Wis.). Trine then broke out the bats to notch 11 hits in an 11-1 victory over Wooster in game two. Fox moved into a tie for eighth in team history with 107 career RBIs. Trine improved to 14-0 on the season, the team's longest unbeaten stretch to open a season.
Game One: Trine 2, Carroll (Wis.) 1
Fox's homer and the combined pitching of Hannah Kampmann (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin Derham Hall) and Danielle Ray (Hamilton, Ohio / Badin) gave the Thunder its first victory of the day.
Two swings accounted for all the runs in the game. After Makenna Hartline (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine) drew a one out walk, Fox connected on a line-drive home run to center to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Thunder in the top of the first. That was one of just two Trine hits in game one.
A leadoff homer in the top of the fourth by Kelly Strassa accounted for Carroll's scoring. Carroll pitcher Amanda Osterhus worked the complete game, surrendering two earned runs on two hits. She walked seven and struck out seven.
Kampmann improved to 8-0 with five innings of work. The freshman allowed an earned run on three hits, walked three and struck out three. Ray notched her third save of the week, allowing two hits and striking out two in two innings of work. Ray stranded a leadoff single by inducing three pop outs to end the seventh.
Game Two: Trine 11, Wooster 1 (5)
The bats struck early and often as the Thunder wrapped up another unbeaten performance.
The Thunder wasted no time getting on the board, loading the bases with one out in the top of the first. Carly Bachna (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) drove in the first run of the game with a single. Lainey McCue (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake) followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0. Trine tacked on another run on an error, before a RBI-groundout by Emily White (Fortville, Ind. / Mount Vernon) capped the five-run first.
Hartline hit a solo homer in the top of the second and Erica Robles (Long Beach, Calif. / Lakewood) added to the margin with a RBI-single in the third. Hartline now has seven home runs on the young season. Robles provided a spark at the top of the lineup with three hits in game two.
Hartline's second big hit of the day was a bases-clearing triple with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth. The hit capped a four-RBI performance. Kristy Rawlings (Lizton, Ind. / Tri-West Hendricks) followed with a RBI-groundout for the first RBI of her collegiate career.
Wooster scored its run on a Linea Brouse RBI-single in the third.
Kate Saupe (Farwell, Mich. / Farwell) picked up her first victory of the season with five innings of work in the circle. The sophomore allowed an earned run on six hits, walked one and struck out a batter. Saupe also made a defensive gem, spearing a line drive and doubling off a runner in the fifth.
White, Bachna and Michaela Hartline (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine) each added two hits in game two for the Thunder.
Trine wraps up its performance in the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow. The Thunder open with a game against Wisconsin-River Falls at 9 a.m. before facing No. 4 Luther at 1:30 p.m. Trine will be looking for its second top-10 win of the trip in the Luther matchup.
