Softball Sweeps Saint Mary's

ANGOLA, Ind.—The No. 6 ranked Trine softball team picked up a pair of six-inning wins over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association foe Saint Mary's on Friday at SportONE/Parkview Field.

The Thunder and the Belles resumed the doubleheader that was scheduled for Thursday night but was postponed due to rain.

Trine improves to 28-2 with the win and is 9-1 against MIAA opponents. The Belles move to 19-11 overall and are 11-3 in conference play.  With the two wins, Trine moves into a tie for first place in the MIAA with Alma.

Kaylee Fox hit two homeruns in game one to tie Trine's all-time homeruns record. She ties Andi Gasco's (2010-13) 42. Fox added another hit in game two to total five RBI on the day.

Makenna Hartline notched her 10th homerun of the season in game two. The freshman drove in six runs off two hits. Nicole Ferraro notched two hits, including one homerun, to drive in three runs. Catherine Porter drove in four runs in the doubleheader.

GAME ONE: Trine 9, Saint Mary's 1 (Six Innings)

Fox was two-for-three at the plate driving in four runs off her two homers. Ferraro hit her second homer of the season scoring two runs. Porter's double in the sixth drove in two.

Danielle Ray improved to 13-0 with the win. In six innings pitched, she only gave up one run and three hits, while striking out seven Saint Mary's batters.

Morgan Raymer took the loss for Saint Mary's moving to 13-4 for the season. In five innings she allowed five runs off five hits with seven strikeouts.  Makenzie Duncan drove in Saint Mary's lone run

After three scoreless innings, the Belle's opened scoring in the top of the fourth inning. Jamie Young and Kelsey Keilman opened with back-to-back singles before Duncan drove in Young when she grounded out to second base.

The Thunder answered in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Fox launched a two-run homer to centerfield. Bachna followed with a single to left center and stole second. Lainey McCue singled down the leftfield line to drive in the Thunder's third run. Ferraro hit the Thunder's second homer of the inning to put Trine up 5-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Fox hit a homer over the right field fence to score two more runs. Porter wrapped up the game with a walk-off double to right center driving in two runs to put Trine over the run rule.

GAME TWO: Trine 14, Saint Mary's 5 (Six Innings)

Makenna Hartline led the Thunder in game two with a homerun and a double to drive in six runs. Claire Ryan had three RBI off two hits. Fox added three more runs on the day to drive in one runner. Porter added two RBI. The Thunder combined for eight stolen bases in the game.

Hannah Kampmann improved to 12-1 with the win striking out three batters.

Caitlyn Migawa led the Belles with three hits. Richards had two hits and drove in both of Saint Mary's runs. Jessica Alberts took the loss moving to 3-3 for the season. She allowed four runs off three hits.

The Thunder bats were hot to open the first inning. Emily White led off with a single up the middle and stole second. White advanced to third off a passed ball. Makenna Hartline reached after being hit by a pitch and followed by stealing second. Ryan singled up the middle to drive in two runs for the Thunder. Fox and Ferraro walked and Porter put the Thunder up 4-0 with a single to right field.

The Thunder added two more runs in the third scoring twice off passed balls.

In the bottom of the fourth, Knudsen and Richards each drove in a run for the Belles.

In the top of the fifth, Makenna Hartline drove in three runs with a homerun over the right centerfield fence. Fox added another run with a single through the left side.

Saint Mary's added two more runs in the bottom of the inning off a single by Duncan and a sac fly by Alyssa Gutierrez.

With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Hartline added three more RBI with a double to right center. The Thunder were up 14-4 after Ryan drove in another run.

In the bottom of the inning, Richards led off with a solo homer to right centerfield.

The Thunder returns to action Sunday, April 23 when they welcome Alma for a doubleheader. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
