ANGOLA, Ind. -- Trine's Catherine Porter has been named to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Softball Team, the organization announced today.
Porter (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth Canton) was named to the Academic All-District VII team, which encompasses schools in the states of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. . The CoSIDA Academic All-District® teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Porter advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Porter graduated in three years as a double-major in criminal justice and forensic science. She earned a 3.7 undergraduate GPA. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in criminal justice with an emphasis in forensic psychology. Her work has resulted in a 3.75 GPA in her master's program. She has been a senator in the student government at Trine and is a member of the National Society of Leadership.
The lone senior for Trine, Porter has helped lead the Thunder to a 30-6 record this season. She earned All-MIAA Second Team honors for her work behind the plate, where she has caught every inning this season. Porter posted a team-leading .474 on-base percentage, batting .333 with a .563 slugging percentage. She has tied her career-high with five home runs this season and has knocked in 28 runs. Her leadership behind the plate has helped lead a pitching staff of all underclassmen to a 2.47 team ERA.
Over the course of her career, Porter has been a key contributor on multiple title teams. She has been a part of three MIAA champions, two MIAA Tournament champions, two NCAA Regional title teams, one Super Regional championship and the only National Championship appearance in school history. She owns a 145-31 career record as a member of the Thunder.
Porter has played a key role in the team's postseason success. She tied a NCAA Division III record with two home runs in an inning during the 2016 Angola Regional. Porter was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Regional as Trine claimed the title in front of the home fans at SportONE/Parkview Softball Field.
Trine competes in the MIAA Softball Tournament at Hope College this weekend. The Thunder face the host Flying Dutch this afternoon. More information on the MIAA Tournament can be found HERE.
