Porter Named to NCAA Division III Softball Championship All-Tournament Team

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Trine's Catherine Porter was named to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship All-Tournament Team, the NCAA announced Tuesday.

Porter (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth Canton) totaled two hits, including a double, one RBI and one walk in two games in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship. Porter's RBI single in the eighth inning against Amherst pulled the Thunder within 4-3. Trine was eliminated from the tournament with losses to Amherst and eventual National Champion Virginia Wesleyan.

During the tournament, Porter tied a NCAA record for all divisions by catching every pitch of every inning during Trine's season. The senior and team captain totaled 305.1 innings behind the plate this year. Her leadership was instrumental in guiding a young pitching staff to a 2.77 team ERA. She threw out six runners attempting to steal and totaled a .976 fielding percentage.

At the plate, Porter set career bests with a .342 batting average, .483 on-base percentage, .535 slugging percentage, 34 RBIs and seven doubles. She tied a career-high with five home runs. During the NCAA postseason, Porter batted .471 with four RBIs.

Other accolades earned by Porter this season included NFCA Division III All-Central Region Third Team honors, as well as recognition on the All-MIAA Second Team. Porter earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for her combined work athletically and in the classroom.

Porter concluded her career fourth in team history with 68 walks. Defensively, she tied for fifth in program history in runners caught stealing (15) and eighth in fielding percentage (.986). A lifetime .310 hitter, she posted a .435 on-base percentage with 14 home runs and 82 RBIs. She walked nearly twice as often as she struck out in her career. In 2016, she was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Angola Regional.

Trine concluded its season 37-10 overall. The Thunder won its second Super Regional championship and third Regional title. The team's 19-0 start was its best in program history. Trine produced five NFCA All-Region performers and six All-MIAA honorees.
