Ray Deals No-Hitter and Offense Rolls in Two Wins

TUCSON, ARIZ. – The Trine University softball team picked up two more wins today to end their spring break trip on a high note. The Thunder defeated SUNY Oneonta in the first game of the day 16-8 and Cornell (Iowa) College 8-0 in the final game of the week.

The Red Dragons came out swinging plating four runs in the top half of the first inning, but the Thunder responded with five of their own during their first at bat taking a 5-4 lead into the second. The teams traded runs in the second, before the Thunder pulled away five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 10-5 lead. Trine finished off the game with a five run fifth to take the win 16-8.

Sophomore Makenna Hartline (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine) led the way for the Thunder with two homeruns in the game. Senior Erica Robles (Long Beach, Calif. / Lakewood) had another solid day going three for four at the plate with two singles, a triple and three stolen bases. Sophomore Claire Ryan (Union Grove, Wis. / Union Grove) came away with three hits as well including the game-winning double in the bottom of the fifth.

Sophomore Danielle Ray (Hamilton, Ohio / Badin) was the hero of the second game pitching a no-hitter, allowing just one baserunner in the entire game. It is the first no-hitter of her career and her fourth win of the season.

Offensively the Thunder continued to bring in runs. There biggest inning came in the fourth where they plated four runs to take a 7-0 lead into the fifth. They added one in the top of the fifth and held on for the 8-0 victory.

Robles came away with two hits in the game and added a stolen base, while freshman Kennedy Baugh (Walton, Ky. / Notre Dame Academy) came away with a home run.

The pair of wins give the Thunder a 12-2 record as they return home from the trip. They will return to the diamond Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18 when they compete in the DePauw Invitation at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.
