Softball Finishes Trip with Two More Wins

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Trine University softball team finished off their spring trip with a pair of victories convincing victories. They defeated Otterbein University by the score of 7-1 and Misericordia University by the score of 9-1.

The Thunder began the day with a steady offensive performance against regional-opponent Otterbein, scoring at least one run in five out of the seven innings. They tallied a run apiece in the first three innings before adding four in the last two to take the contest 7-1.

Offensively the team was paced by senior Lainey McCue (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake) finished the contest with a team-high three RBIs coming off of a home run and one other hit. Four other members of the team, all freshmen and sophomores, brought in a run apiece during the game.

In the circle, senior Kate Saupe (Farwell, Mich. / Farwell) got the start and put up four strong innings of work, including three strikeouts, to earn the win. Junior Hannah Kampmann (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin Derham Hall) pitched in relief for three innings and shutout the opposition for the rest of the contest to earn her first save of the season.

Trine's offense was more explosive in the second contest as they had built an 8-1 lead after four innings. They finished off the run-rule win in the bottom of the sixth with a walk-off single from junior Victoria Porter (Canton, Mich. / Canton).

Both junior Makenna Hartline (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine) and sophomore Mercede Daugherty (Watervilet, Mich. / Watervilet) came away from the contest with home runs. Makenna Hartline led the team with three RBIs in the contest, while Porter and Daugherty both finished with two.

Kampmann got the start in the contest and pitched solidly for four innings to earn the win. She allowed just the one hit and one run in the contest.

Trine improves to 8-2 following the pair of victories. They will take the field again on Monday, March 25 when they travel to face Ohio Northern University in a pair of games. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
