Thunder Split with Visiting Belles

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University softball team took the first game from visiting Saint Mary's College before dropping the second in their second Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) competition of the season.

The first game of the night started with a run for the opposition as the Belles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and held it until the bottom half of the next inning.

In that third inning, the Thunder found themselves with runners at the corners and two outs. Freshman Lexi Ayers (Logansport, Ind. / Logansport) made the most of her at-bat sending a towering fly ball over the fence in left-center to give the team the 3-1 lead.

Trine would score two more in the fourth and one in the sixth and shut out the opposition for the rest of the contest to come away with the 6-1 victory.

Junior Hannah Kampmann (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin Derham Hall) once again pitched well in the contest. Despite allowing seven hits she finished with only the one earned run and a walk while striking out five.

In the second game of the night, Trine pitching struggled to find the zone during the first inning allowing four runs to the Belles who took the early lead and chased the team's starter from the circle. The Thunder were unable to get the bats going enough to overcome the early deficit and would fall in the contest by the score of 5-1.

Freshman Taylor Murdock (Lapel, Ind. / Lapel) drove in the lone Trine run in the top of the third with a sharp single to the right side. Classmate Holly Loveless (Frankfort, Ind. / Clinton Prairie) pitched well in long relief for the Thunder allowing just one run on five hits in her 5.1 innings of work.

The Thunder finish the day with a 15-3 overall record and a 3-1 record in the MIAA. They will travel to face Olivet College on Saturday, April 6 in their doubleheader of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
