Thunder Sweep Visiting Britons

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University softball team came away with two wins against visiting Albion College, with freshman Ashley Swartout (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield) and sophomore Mackenzi Cannici (Huntington, Ind. / Huntington) leading the way offensively for the team.

The Thunder started the first game of the evening trailing as they gave up a run in the top of the first inning. The team started to slowly get the offense rolling in the bottom of the third as they tied the game. They took the lead for the first time in the next inning and then built on it in the fifth with two more runs.

Trine entered the bottom of the sixth with a 4-1 lead. The Britons then walked in a run and allow a two-run double to give the Thunder the 7-1 lead. Following the double with runners on second and third, Swartout ended the game in impressive walk-off fashion with a towering shot to left center field. The three-run homer gave Trine the final 10-1 victory ending the game after six innings.

In addition to ending the game early, Swartout led the way in the contest for the Thunder finishing the game with five RBIs on three hits including a double and the home run. Fellow Freshman Taylor Murdock (Lapel, Ind. / Lapel) also recorded two RBIs in the contest with two hits including a double.

In the circle, junior Hannah Kampmann (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin Derham Hall) came away with her tenth win of the season. She allowed no earned runs while walking three and striking out six.

Trine paced the second game offensively scoring a run in each the first, second, fourth and sixth innings as they cruised to a 4-0 victory.

This time Cannici led the way for the Thunder as she finished the game with three RBIs on two singles and a sacrifice fly. Swartout recorded the other RBI of the contest to finish the day with six.

Senior Kate Saupe (Farwell, Mich. / Farwell) pitched fantastically for the Thunder coming away with her 11th win and fifth shutout of the season. She allowed just five hits in the contest and walked one while recording a season-high nine strikeouts.

Trine improves to 24-4 overall and 10-2 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play following the win. They will host Calvin College on Saturday, April 20 in an MIAA doubleheader battle for first place. Both teams are currently tied with just two losses in conference play. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
