Thunder Sweep Visiting Tigers

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University softball team finished off the regular season with a pair of wins over visiting Wittenberg University.

The first game of the day was highlighted by a strong offensive performance by the Thunder as they cruised to a 13-3 win in five innings. Trine came up with runs each time the team came up to bat, scoring three in the first and third, two in the second and five in the fourth.

Freshman Ashley Swartout (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield) led the way offensively for the team finishing the game with four RBIs coming off of a single and a double. Three other members of the team finished with two RBIs each including sophomore Mercede Daugherty (Watervilet, Mich. / Watervilet), junior Claire Ryan (Union Grove, Wis. / Union Grove) and senior Lainey McCue (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake).

Senior Kate Saupe (Farwell, Mich. / Farwell) came away with her 13th win of the season in the contest. She allowed the three runs on six hits and one walk while fanning four.

The second game looked to be headed in the same direction as the first with the Thunder putting up three in the bottom half of the inning. But the Tigers' pitcher settled in and both teams would go scoreless through the rest of the game, with Trine picking up the 3-0 victory.

Three different members of the Thunder brought in runners for the team. Swartout brought in the first with a ground out to second and McCue brought in another with a double up the middle. Junior Victoria Porter (Canton, Mich. / Canton) picked up the final RBI of the game with a single.

Junior Hannah Kampmann (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin Derham Hall) pitched the game in the circle for the Thunder. She finished with her fourth shutout of the season allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out four.

Trine improves to 30-4 overall following the pair of victories. They will next take the diamond in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament play. Their first game will be against Saint Mary's College and is scheduled to be played on Thursday, May 2 beginning at 1 p.m.
