ANGOLA, Ind. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) regular season champion Trine University softball team came away with both athlete of the year awards along with a healthy handful of first and second team All-MIAA selections, the league office announced today.
Leading off, both in the team's lineup and in the awards, was junior Makenna Hartline (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine) who was named the MIAA Position Player of the Year along with being tabbed first team All-MIAA. She becomes the fifth Thunder player to take the award. This is her first time being named first team All-MIAA after coming in on the second team last season.
Makenna Hartline led the way for the Thunder offensively leading the team with ten homers, 34 runners batted in, 31 walks, 12 stolen bases and with a .567 on-base percentage and a .859 slugging percentage. During MIAA play she finished second among competition with a .905 slugging percentage and five home runs while leading the conference with a .590 on-base percentage and with 17 walks.
Hannah Kampmann (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin Derham Hall) joined her classmate by being named MIAA Pitcher of the Year and appearing on the first team All-MIAA. It is the sixth time that a Thunder pitcher has earned the award. It is the first time that Kampmann has been named All-MIAA.
Kampmann finished the year leading the team with 83 strikeouts in her 100 innings pitched. She also tied with most wins and came in second with a 1.51 ERA. She finished MIAA play with a perfect 7-0 record and topped the stat chart with wins and strikeouts (44). She finished second in the conference with a 2.21 ERA.
Senior Lainey McCue (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake) and Junior Michaela Hartline (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine) joined their teammates by receiving their first first team All-MIAA honors.
McCue finished the season second on the team with six home runs, 29 runners batted in and 41 hits. She came in top five on the team in batting average (.410) and slugging percentage (.680). During MIAA play she finished ninth with a .407 batting average.
Michaela Hartline came in second on the team with 22 walks and five home runs. She finished the season with a .451 on-base percentage and a .557 slugging percentage. During MIAA play she finished only behind her sister with 12 walks and came in eighth with a .700 slugging percentage.
Finishing off the award winners for the Thunder were a pair of second team All-MIAA recipients. Both senior Kate Saupe (Farwell, Mich. / Farwell) and junior Victoria Porter (Canton, Mich. / Canton) came away with the honor for the first time in her career.
Saupe led the team with a 1.51 ERA during the season and tied for most wins with 13. She came in second with 68 strikeouts. During MIAA play she came in with a low 1.56 ERA and finished third with five wins.
Porter finished the season with a .414 batting average including 20 runners batted in on 29 hits.
The Thunder, who finished the season with their ninth MIAA title, are scheduled to begin postseason play with a game against Saint Mary's College.
