Softball Splits on Opening Day

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Trine University softball team finished the first day of their season with a win and a loss, defeating Northland College 11-0 and dropping a tight game to Wartburg College 5-4.

In the first game of the day the Thunder score six runs in the first and five in the third as they picked up an 11-0 win in five innings over the Lumber Jills.

Junior Kennedy Baugh (Walton, Ky. / Notre Dame Academy) led the way offensively for the team with four runners batted in on the back of a double and a home run. Fellow junior Haley Springer (Crestwood, Ky. / Oldham County) finished with two RBIs with a single and a triple in the contest.

In the second game of the day, the Thunder found themselves in a tight contest with the Knights.

Trine struck first in the top of the third inning with a single up the middle from sophomore Ashley Swartout (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield) bringing in the run.

In the bottom of the fifth Wartburg took the 2-1 lead with a pair of runs, one coming off a double and the other off of an error. It was a short-lived lead however as Baugh tied the game up in the sixth with an RBI double.

The Knights took back the lead in the bottom half of the inning with a homer to left field. But once again in the top of the seventh the Thunder posted a response, this time in the form of a two-run homer of their own from freshman Amanda Prather (Indianapolis, Ind. / Roncalli).

Wartburg came up with the 5-4 victory in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh.

The Thunder will continue competition tomorrow with another pair of games. The first comes at 10:15 a.m. against the College of Saint Benedict.
