Softball Sweeps Pair of Feline Opponents

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Trine University softball team came up with a pair of wins on another day in Florida. They started the day with a win over Johnson & Wales (R.I.) by the score of 7-3 before run-ruling Eastern Nazarene College 12-0.

The Thunders started out trailing against the Wildcats as they came up with a three-run homer in the first inning.

That lead would last until the fourth inning when the Trine bats woke up. Junior Kennedy Baugh (Walton, Ky. / Notre Dame Academy) started the scoring with a double to left-center which scored a run. A second run scored on an error by the catcher. Senior Michaela Hartline (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine) and freshman Ellie Trine (Kokomo, Ind. / Kokomo) each recorded doubles that scored a run.

The Thunder added to their lead in the sixth with freshman Amanda Prather (Indianapolis, Ind. / Roncalli) walking in a run and sophomore Ashley Swartout (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield) brining in two with a single.

In the circle, freshman Katie Nevdal (Durand, Ill. / Durand) picked up a win in relief. She pitched four shutout innings allowing just two hits and striking out one.

In the second game the Thunder game the Lions a hitting clinic, scoring two runs in the second, eight in the fourth and two in the fifth to end the game early by the score of 12-0.

Four members of the team came up with home runs in the contest including Swartout, Mercede Daugherty (Watervilet, Mich. / Watervilet), Lexi Ayers (Logansport, Ind. / Logansport) and Victoria Porter (Canton, Mich. / Canton). Swartout led the team with three RBIs. Sophomore Taylor Murdock (Lapel, Ind. / Lapel), Ayers and Porter each ended the game with two.

In the circle, Hannah Kampmann (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin Derham Hall) picked up the shutout win. She finished the contest giving up just one walk while striking out three.

The team improves to 5-1 following the pair of wins. They will return to the field on Thursday, March 5 with a pair of games. The first comes against York (Pa.) and is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
