Makenna Hartline Named CoSIDA Academic All-American

AUSTIN, Texas -- Trine University softball senior Makenna Hartline (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine) has been named a 2020 Academic All-American® by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Hartline makes her first appearance on the list as a third-team selection. She is the first Thunder softball player to achieve the honor since 2014 and only the third player in program history, joining Trine alums Carly Searles and Bree Fuller.

Hartline became eligible for the award earlier this spring by being named to the Academic All-District team.

Hartline will graduate from Trine with a degree in Exercise Science and a 3.64 GPA. On the field, she anchored the interior of the infield playing shortstop the last three season was set to return to the position following spring break this season. Earlier this month she was named the recipient of this year's Cheryl L. Coons Award, given to Trine University's outstanding female senior athlete.

Despite missing out on her senior season, Makenna boasts multiple top-ten career statistics at Trine. She finishes with 152 runs scored, third overall at Trine. She is fourth with a .456 career on-base percentage and 33 home runs and fifth with a .678 slugging percentage and 72 walks. She also sits in first having been hit-by-pitch 24 times.

A student-athlete's performances both in the classroom and in the competitive arena are taken into account for consideration for the honor. To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 (on 4.00 scale), have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

CoSIDA began the distinguished Academic All-America program in 1952, and since then, has honored thousands of deserving student-athletes from numerous sports across all divisions with these elite Academic All-America scholar-athlete honors.

Despite the cancellation of spring competition during COVID-19, CoSIDA continued its sponsorship of the Academic All-America awards program. Student-athletes were selected based on career statistics. For a full list of the honorees view the official CoSIDA release.
