Thunder Stymie Blugolds; Advance to Winners' Bracket

ANGOLA, Ind. – Sophomore Adrienne Rosey (Schoolcraft, Mich. / Schoolcraft) once again led the way from the circle for the Trine University softball team, securing an opening game shutout to advance to the winners' side of the bracket of the 2022 NCAA Division III Softball Angola, Ind. Regional. The team defeated Wisconsin-Eau Claire by the score of 3-0.

Rosey started the day fantastically striking out five of the first six batters she faced in the contest. The top of the third saw the defense back up their pitcher with sophomore Scarlett Elliott (Utica, Ohio / Utica) catching a sacrifice bunt attempt and then picking off the runner at first.

The bats got going for the team in the bottom of the same inning. Freshman Ainsley Phillips (Yorktown, Ind. / Yorktown) started the run with a single, before moving to second on an error and to third when senior Taylor Murdock (Lapel, Ind. / Lapel) was hit by pitch. Senior Mercede Daugherty (Watervliet, Mich. / Watervliet) then brought Phillips home with a ground out to second base that almost turned into a hit.

Rosey would continue to work in the circle but the bats quieted until the bottom of the sixth. In that inning senior Lexi Clark (Niles, Mich. / Edwardsburg) pinch hit to lead off and slapped a hit to second to reach base. Junior Amanda Prather (Indianapolis, Ind. / Roncalli) moved the runner to second with a bunt.

Freshman Emma Beyer (Rochester, Mich. / Stoney Creek) would then record a single and a stolen base to put runners on second and third. Junior Anna Gill (Ashville, Ohio / Teays Valley) would take full advantage of the situation blasting a ball to the left-center gap for a double that scored two building the lead to 3-0.

The defense then finished off the game securing the victory. Rosey would finish with the seven-inning shutout allowing just three hits while striking out 12 in her first NCAA tournament appearance.

The team moves to the winners' side of the bracket where they will face North Central (Ill.) College tomorrow, Saturday, May 14. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
