Newell Named MIAA POTW

ROYAL OAK, MICH.— Trine University's Amy Newell has been named one of two Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Players of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Newell, a junior from Three Rivers, Mich. (Three Rivers HS) averaged 20.5 points and seven rebounds as the Thunder split two games at the Bluffton Holiday Tournament. She scored a career-high 26 points in a 76-63 victory over Brescia to help Trine advance to the championship game of the tournament. The junior followed that performance with a 15-point, nine-rebound effort in a 75-62 loss to Bluffton in the tournament championship. Newell is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career. She shared Player of the Week honors with Olivet guard Chelsea Ciba.

In tournament play, Newell connected on 50 percent of her shots from the field (13-of-26) and hit 15-of-17 free throws (88 percent). Newell has turned up her play recently, scoring in double-figures in three of her last four games. Over that stretch, she is averaging 15 points and eight rebounds per game. Newell leads Trine in rebounding, averaging 6.3 per contest on the season.

Trine carries a 3-8 record into Saturday's home contest against MIAA-foe Hope. The Thunder have won two of their last three. The Flying Dutchmen enter the game undefeated. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Hershey Hall.
