Thunder Unable to Overcome Slow Start at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich.-- Trine was unable to overcome a slow start, as the Thunder fell to Kalamazoo, 81-64, in MIAA-action Saturday afternoon at Anderson Athletic Center.

The Hornets started the game on a 14-2 run, and the Thunder were never able to pull any closer than four the rest of the contest. Kelsey Adamski scored 23 points and dished out nine assists to lead Kalamazoo. Emily Lindsay came off the bench to add 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Trine was led by Kayla Dunn (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City), who scored 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds and came away with five steals. Trine fell to 11-7 overall, 5-4 in the MIAA. Kalamazoo improved to 10-7, 5-4 in conference play.

Kelsey Henselmeier (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) added 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting for the Thunder. Trine shot 33 percent from the field (23-of-69) and held a 44-38 edge on the glass.

Perri Nicholson notched 15 points and seven rebounds for Kalamazoo. Lindsay helped pace the Hornet bench to a 34-13 scoring advantage over their Trine counterparts. Kalamazoo shot 50 percent from the field (29-of-58), including a 6-of-14 (43 percent) effort from long-distance.

The Hornets scored the first seven points of the game, as they held the Thunder without a field goal for the first 4:33 of the contest. Kalamazoo hit six of their first eight shots from the field on their way to the 14-2 start. The Hornets would lead by as much by 15 in the first half.

Trine was able to work back into the contest, and pulled within four after a 10-4 start to the second half. Four-straight from Henselmeier closed the score to 42-38 with 15:41 to play. Taylor Cole (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Shepherd) later pulled the Thunder to within 46-42 with 13:13 remaining.

A 12-3 Hornet run restored a comfortable advantage for Kalamazoo, and Trine was never able to pull within single-digits the rest of the game.

Trine wraps up a four-game road swing this Wednesday, Jan. 28 at St. Mary's. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
