Martin named MIAA Player of the Week

FREELAND, Mich.-- Trine's Hayley Martin has been named the MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) earned the honor with a career-best performance in Saturday's 67-54 victory over Anderson. The sophomore scored 31 points to tie for the fourth-highest scoring effort in a single game in team history. The performance marked the first time a Trine player had topped 30 points in a game in three years. Martin knocked down 9-of-17 field goals, including 2-of-4 from three-point range. She added 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Martin is being honored as conference player of the week for the first time in her career.

A transfer from Division-II Nova Southeastern, Martin has found a home with the Thunder in the early going this season. Martin leads the team and ranks second in the MIAA in scoring, averaging 18 points per contest. She is tied for the conference lead in averaging 2.3 blocks per contest. Martin also lead the Thunder in averaging seven rebounds per game.

Trine is off to a 3-1 start, including a victory over no. 25 Baldwin Wallace. All but one of the team's games have come against opponents with a winning record.

The Thunder open conference play Wednesday night at no. 11 Hope. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
