ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine women's basketball team has released its 2016-17 schedule, the team announced Friday.
The Thunder open the season Nov. 18-19 at the Wheaton College's Beth Baker Classic. Trine's opponents have yet to be determined. The Thunder could have the opportunity to face regular NCAA Tournament participant Wheaton, who won 22 games last season. Other participants in the tournament include Blackburn and UW-Platteville.
Following the season-opening tournament, the Thunder return to Hershey Hall for the home-opener against Oberlin on Nov. 22. Trine will also host Heidelberg and Illinois Tech at home during non-conference play. The Thunder defeated both of those teams last season.
Non-league road trips also include games at Anderson (Ind.), Defiance, Franklin and Hanover. Franklin finished last season 19-8 overall and reached the HCAC Semifinals. Hanover suffered its first losing season last year after eight straight campaigns of 15 or more wins.
The conference slate once again includes home and away matchups with every MIAA foe. Trine has five league games that are a part of doubleheaders that will feature both Thunder basketball teams in action in Hershey Hall. The University will host community day events at doubleheaders scheduled for Jan. 14 (vs. Alma) and Feb. 11 (vs. Kalamazoo).
Trine captured its best season as a member of NCAA Division III last season, notching an overall record of 19-8. The Thunder won seven-straight games, including two over nationally-ranked conference foe Calvin to reach the MIAA Tournament Championship for the first team in team history. Trine won three games against nationally-ranked opponents last year.
The Thunder project to return its entire starting five from last season. Center Hayley Martin (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) and forward Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind. / Garrett) each earned All-MIAA Second Team honors in their first season at Trine. Taylor Cole (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Shepherd), Ashley Elliott (Scottsburg, Ind. / Scottsburg) and Cassidy Williams (Archbold, Ohio / Archbold) also return with starting experience.
