No. 21 Wheaton Edges Past Women's Basketball at Beth Baker Classic

WHEATON, Ill.—The Trine women's basketball team was edged out by No. 21 Wheaton, 81-68, on Saturday afternoon in the championship game at the Beth Baker Classic.

Hayley Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) had an impressive first quarter for Trine notching 10 of the Thunder's 14 points. Wheaton held a nine-point lead after the first.

Trine went on an eight-point streak to open the second and came within two points of Wheaton. Wheaton bounced back, but Trine would come within six points at the end of the second. Trine outscored Wheaton 21-18 in the second 10 minutes of play.

Wheaton came out hot in the second half keeping the Thunder scoreless for the first four minutes of the third quarter. Wheaton outscored Trine 20-8 in the third.

Trine worked to rally back in the fourth outscoring Wheaton 25-20, but the third quarter deficit was too much to overcome. Trine moved to 1-1 overall this season, while Wheaton improved to 2-1.

Martin led the Trine with 18 points and had a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) added 14 points with seven rebounds and two assists.

Wheaton was led by Katie McDaniels with 21 points, while Chantal Meacham notched 19. Kelly Lawson added double digits with 11 points, while Kelly Thornton came off the bench to score 12. Maggie Dansdill had a team-high six rebounds.

Trine will open its home schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 22 when it will play host to Oberlin for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
