Strong Second Half Sends Women’s Basketball Past Albion

ALBION, Mich.—The Trine women's basketball team took advantage of strong second half scoring to defeat Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association foe, 62-49, on Saturday evening.

The Thunder has won its last six games to improve to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA. The team is off to its best start since 2000 and has earned its first 3-0 start as a member of the MIAA. Albion moves to 5-2 and 1-1 in conference action.

The Thunder held an 18-10 advantage after the first quarter.  Junior Hayley Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) was perfect going five for five on field goals and added a three pointer to total 11 points. The Thunder hit a slump in the second, only scoring four points. The Britons outscored Trine with 15 points to hold a 25-22 edge after the first half. Trine bounced back to outscore Albion 18-12 in the third and sealed the victory with 22 points in the fourth to the Britons 12.

Martin led the Thunder with a season-high 25 points. It was the second time Martin has scored over 20 points in a game, and the junior has reached double digits in every game this season. Martin also matched her career high in blocks with five and added six rebounds. Freshman Katy Steers (Portage, Ind./Portage) helped Trine triumph in the fourth quarter scoring nine points to total 13 on the day. She also added five rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore Cassidy Williams (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) scored a season-high 10 points and added a season-high three steals. Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) grabbed eight rebounds for the Thunder, and senior Taylor Cole (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Shepherd) tied her career high of seven rebounds.

Albion was led by Oreyana Curry and Evelyn Wischmeyer with 10 points apiece.

The Thunder returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 18 when it will travel to Defiance for a 6 p.m. contest.
