ANGOLA, Ind.—The Trine women's basketball team continued its winning ways on Saturday afternoon with a 79-48 win over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent Adrian in Hershey Hall.
The victory marks the Thunder's 11th-straight win, which is the third longest streak in school history. Trine, who is receiving top 25 votes, improves to 12-1 overall and is 5-0 in the MIAA. Adrian falls to 7-6 and 3-3 MIAA. This was the eighth time this season that the Thunder has held its opponent to under 50 points. It is also the fifth time this season that Trine has won by more than 30 points.
Trine immediately jumped out to the lead in the first quarter and with a little under four minutes left, went on an 11-point streak. The Thunder finished the quarter with a 21-8 advantage. Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind. / Garrett) led her team with seven points.
Adrian shot 54.5% on field goals in the second quarter to narrowly outscore the Thunder, 13-11. Hayley Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) notched six points to help Trine hold a 33-21 lead going into halftime.
The Thunder offense came alive in the third quarter, outscoring Adrian 31-7. Montana Martin (Columbia City, Ind./Churubusco) was perfect in the quarter grabbing 15 points, while going five for five in field goals, three-for-three in three pointers and adding two free throws. Three minutes into the quarter, Martin made her three, three pointers right in a row for the Thunder.
Seven different Trine players scored in the fourth quarter to seal the Thunder's victory. Thirty-nine of the Thunder's points were scored off the bench.
Hayley Martin led the Thunder with 19 points and six rebounds, while Montana Martin totaled a career high 17. Montana missed only one field goal during the game and was perfect on three pointers. Dawson added 12 points, and Shaely Duff (Greenfield, Ind./Mount Vernon) added a career-high 9 points.
Adrian was led by Sadia Johnson with 17 points, while Shannon Garvey added eight. Starnisha Harris helped her team with five assists.
The Thunder returns to action on Wednesday when it will travel to Kalamazoo for a 6 p.m. game.
