Decisive Second Half Propels Women's Basketball Past Adrian

ADRIAN, Mich.—The No. 23 Trine women's basketball team earned its 19th win of the season on Wednesday night with a 69-51 victory at Adrian. With the victory, the Thunder ties its highest win total since joining NCAA Division III in 2004.

Trine improved to 19-2 overall and is 12-1 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Adrian falls to 12-10 and 7-7 MIAA.

Junior Hayley Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) led the Thunder with her third double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Martin also added two blocks, two assists and a steal. Sophomore Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) added 14 points, while Shaely Duff (Greenfield, Ind./Mount Vernon) notched a career-high 11. Senior Taylor Cole (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Shepherd) added nine points, six assists, five rebounds and a steal.

The Bulldogs were led by Sadia Johnson with 16 points. Ashley Morris added 12 points. Angelina Goosby grabbed seven rebounds, while Starnisha Harris notched six.

The Thunder shot 53.7% from the field, while the Thunder defense held the Bulldogs to 32.8%. Adrian led the Thunder in second chance points with 16 to Trine's four.

The Bulldogs and the Thunder were tied at 15 all after the first quarter of play. Katy Steers (Portage, Ind./Portage) led Trine with six points, while Cassidy Williams (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) added five. Ashley Morris paced the Bulldogs with 10 points, while Johnson recorded five.

Midway through the second quarter, Trine went on an eight-point run to give the Thunder a 26-17 advantage. In the last four minutes of play, the Bulldogs outscored Trine 10-4 to keep the game tied at 30-30 heading into halftime. Duff led Trine with five points, while Martin and Cole each had four.

The Thunder jumped out to a quick lead in the third quarter and continued to lead throughout the rest of the game. Trine outscored Adrian 23-12 in the third. Dawson contributed eight points, while Duff and Martin each had six. Johnson added six points for Adrian. The Thunder shot 66.7% from the field and 50% from the three-point line.

Trine once again outscored Adrian 16-9 in the fourth quarter. Dawson led her team with six points, while Martin notched five.

The Thunder returns to Hershey Hall on Saturday for its final home game of the season. Trine will play host to Kalamazoo for a 1 p.m. tip-ff for Hoopla Community Day.
