Williams Named MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week

FREELAND, Mich.—Trine's Cassidy Williams has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Williams (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) earns the league's final weekly award after helping lead the Thunder to its first MIAA Tournament title and first DIII NCAA tournament bid. Williams totaled 15 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and five steals on the weekend. The sophomore notched a season-high eight rebounds in the Thunders' semifinal win over Albion.

Williams led the team's defensive effort, holding both Albion and Calvin to 42 points each on the weekend. That total was the lowest point total for each of the respective opponents all season. The Thunder defense held the Britons to 34 points its season scoring average. Williams' stellar defense held two of the leading scorers in the MIAA, each first-team All-MIAA honorees, to a combined 8-29 from the field.

No. 18 Trine heads into the NCAA tournament with a 24-2 record, just one win behind the school record of 25 from the 1988-89 season.

Trine will learn its NCAA opponent Monday afternoon.
