Trine Women’s Basketball Wraps Up NCAA Tournament with Loss to Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio—The No. 15 Trine women's basketball team was edged out of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday night, 55-48, by No. 5 Ohio Northern University.

The Polar Bears took advantage of a strong second and fourth quarter to get past the Thunder. Trine wraps up its 2016-17 season with a 25-3 record. The Thunder tied its school record for wins. Ohio Northern improves to 29-0 and advances to the Sweet 16.



Trine was led by sophomore Montana Martin (Columbia City, Ind./Churubusco) with 15 points. Cassidy Williams (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) added nine points with four assists. Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) scored eight points, while Hayley Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) and Tashayla Sutorious (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne) each notched seven points. Hayley Martin grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Ohio Northern was paced by Amy Bullimore with 20 points and seven rebounds. Jenna Dirksen scored 12 points with five rebounds. Britt Lauck added nine points.

Trine scored 24 points from the bench to ONU's four. The Thunder defense held the Fighting Polar Bears to 30.2%. field goal percentage.

The Thunder and Ohio Northern were tied at 2-2 midway through the first quarter. Trine went on to score eight-straight points to hold an 8-2 advantage after the first. Montana Martin led the Thunder with six points.

Ohio Northern opened the second going on a nine-point run to take an 11-8 lead. The Thunder tied the game back up with a little over a minute left in the quarter. Bullimore scored three free throws to give ONU a two-point advantage going into halftime.

The Fighting Polar Bears continued to hold an advantage throughout the third quarter. ONU lengthened its lead to as many as six points. The Thunder came back to score four points to come within two heading into the fourth quarter.

The Thunder tied up the game twice early in the fourth. Ohio Northern's offense  went on to outscore Trine 19-14 to grab the win. Dawson led the Thunder with six points, while Montana Martin added five. Bullimore led Ohio Northern with nine points. 

Trine's Taylor Cole (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Shepherd) played the final game of her collegiate career. Cole concluded her career sixth in steals in team history. She notched one assist in 18 minutes in her final game.
