ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine women's basketball team has announced its 2017-18 schedule, the team revealed today.
Highlighting the schedule is a trip to Las Vegas, Nev. for the prestigious D3Hoops.com Classic, Dec. 28-29. The team's second game in the tournament features a matchup against defending NCAA Division III National Champion Amherst. The Mammoths earned a perfect 33-0 record while claiming the national title last season. The Thunder open play in Las Vegas against UC Santa Cruz, another NCAA Tournament participant. Santa Cruz finished last season 14-11 overall after bowing out of the postseason in the first round.
The season tips off with a home tilt against Defiance on Nov. 15. Trine defeated the Yellowjackets last year. The Thunder play a stretch of three consecutive non-league home games against Oberlin, Hanover and Franklin. Trine defeated all three teams last year.
The Thunder also travel to Denison for tournament action immediately following the home opener. Trine will face Kenyon and Denison Nov. 18-19. Kenyon placed second in the North Coast Athletic Conference and finished 19-8 last season, while Denison reached the conference's tournament championship after defeating Kenyon in the semifinals. Trine also faces Heidelberg on the road in non-conference action.
The MIAA slate opens with three conference games prior to the new year, highlighted by a Dec. 9 rematch of the MIAA Tournament Championship against Calvin in Hershey Hall. The Thunder once again take on every league foe twice. The team hosts back-to-back conference games against Hope and Calvin (Jan. 3 and 6), as well as Albion and Kalamazoo (Feb. 10 and 17) to close the regular season.
Trine will be looking to follow up on an historic season that saw the team tie the program record with 25 wins. Along the way, the Thunder won its first MIAA regular season and tournament championships, appeared in its first NCAA Tournament and won its first NCAA Tournament game in program history.
Trine University is scheduled to open its new MTI Center early in 2018, which will host men's and women's basketball games. The 74,840-square foot, 3,000-seat arena will also include a bowling alley, fitness center and esports arena.
