Trine Stays Unbeaten With Blowout Against Oberlin

ANGOLA, IND.  --  Trine University women's basketball team held its opponent to under 10 points in three out of four quarters, while putting up 80 points to win big against Oberlin College, 80-32, and remain undefeated on the season.

After a slow start by both squads offensively to begin the opening quarter, Trine (4-0) ended up outscoring Oberlin, 18-8, in the first 10 minutes and used an 8-0 scoring run that ended in a jumper by freshman Shay Herbert (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) to give itself a 12-point advantage, 18-6, with under a minute remaining in the period.  Oberlin (2-2) tallied the final points of the quarter on a jumper, but the Thunder still maintained a double-digit lead heading into quarter number two.

Oberlin cut the margin to single figures within the first three minutes of the second quarter, but a three-point play by junior Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) extended the lead to 11 points, 23-12, with 5:20 remaining in the half.  After an ensuing bucket by the Yeowomen, the Thunder took control with a 13-2 run to end the half and take a 34-16 advantage into the locker rooms.

Coming out of the locker rooms, Trine continued its run with back-to-back buckets by freshman Camille Lira (Murrieta, Calif./Rosary Academy) and Dawson to go up by 22 points, 38-16.  Trine continued to pull away as Oberlin was held to just six points in the quarter.  The Thunder went on to record their largest lead of the period of 37 points, 58-21, on a layup by junior Shelby Oldham (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) en route to a 58-22 margin after three quarters of play.

The fourth quarter saw no let-up by Trine offensively as the Thunder increased their lead to their largest of the game, 80-27, with just under two minutes to go following a three-pointer by freshman Brayden Curtis (Cassopolis, Mich./Edwardsburg).  Oberlin recorded the final points of the game, but the Thunder still cruised to the 80-32 final.  

Trine had three players score in double figures, led by the duo of Dawson and senior Jayde Abenth (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) with a game-high 14 points each.  Abenth's 14 points were a career-high as a member of the Thunder and shot seven-of 16 (43.8 percent) from the field.  Lira was the other player in double digits with 11 points.  Herbert finished the game with a game-best eight rebounds and scored nine points.  Junior Cassidy Williams (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) tallied a game-high five assists and five steals in addition to finishing second on the team in rebounding with five boards.

The Thunder with go for their fifth-straight win when they host Hanover College on Sunday, Nov. 26 at Hershey Hall.  The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
