Martin Scores 14 in Win Against Oberlin

OBERLIN, OHIO  --  Senior Montana Martin (Columbia City, Ind./Churubusco) scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Trine University women's basketball team to a 77-53 win against Oberlin College.

Martin was one of three players to score in double figures and scored her 14 points on four-of-six shooting (66.7 percent), including three-of-four (75.0 percent) from three-point range.  Junior Katy Steers (Portage, Ind./Portage) was second in scoring with 11 points and senior Cassidy Williams (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) added 10 points to go along with a game-high five assists.

Senior Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Oberlin (2-2) jumped out to an early three-point lead, 5-2, in the opening minutes of the first quarter.  Trine (3-1) then went on a 10-3 scoring run that ended in a layup by Williams off of her own steal that gave the Thunder a four-point advantage, 12-8, with just over three minutes to go in the quarter.  Trine ended the scoring in the period on consecutive layups by freshmen Kelsy Taylor (Louisville, Ky./New Albany) and Tara Bieniewicz (Chesterfield, Mich./Dakota) that resulted in a five-point lead, 18-13, after the first 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, Trine began to pull away as the Thunder outscored the Yeowomen, 23-11.  Trine began the period with a 9-2 run to extend out to a 12-point lead after a jumper by Dawson at the 6:38 mark.  The visitors went on to lead by as many as 19 points with just seconds remaining thanks to a three-pointer by freshman Kayla Wildman (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) that made it a 41-22 ballgame.  Oberlin tallied the final points of the half on a jumper as time expired to post a halftime score of 41-24.

Trine continued its dominant play in the third quarter as the Thunder held Oberlin to just nine points, while scoring 23 of their own.  Oberlin scored the first basket of the period, but Trine then scored the next 10, that included five points by sophomore Shay Herbert (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) alone during the run.  The Thunder went on to lead by as many as 31 points, 64-33, their largest of the game to that point, following a bucket by Wildman that capped the scoring in the quarter as Trine led, 64-33.

The fourth quarter saw Trine post its largest margin of the game of 34 points when Martin was fouled on a three-point attempt and converted on all three of her shots from the charity stripe to make the score, 69-35, with 7:26 to play.  The Yeowomen narrowed the gap to 20 points, 73-53, late in the game, but a three-point play by freshman Rachel Stewart (Pekin, Ind./Eastern) and one-of-two free-throws by freshman Hannah Milligan (Clinton Twp., Mich./Lutheran North) were the final points of the contest en route to Trine winning by the final of 77-53.

Trine will next travel to Marietta, Ohio for the two-day Marietta College Tournament on Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 24-25.  The Thunder will take on Frostburg State in their opening game on Friday with tip-off set for 8 p.m.
