Thunder Takes Care of Scots

ALMA, MICH.  --  The Trine University women's basketball team began Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action with a convincing 77-46 win against Alma (Mich.) College in Alma, Mich.

Senior Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) led all scorers with 21 points on nine-of--15 shooting (60.0 percent).  Fellow senior, Shaely Duff (Greenfield, Ind./Mount Vernon) also scored in double figures with 13 points to round out the high scorers.

Senior Cassidy Williams (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) tallied a career-high nine assists.

Trine (6-1, 1-0 MIAA) took control of the game right from the start by outscoring Alma (5-3, 0-1 MIAA), 21-8, in the first quarter.  The Thunder opened the period on a 12-2 scoring run and led by as many as 15 points with a little over two minutes remaining after a jumper by Dawson that made the score 21-6.  Alma tallied the final points of the quarter on a layup, but Trine maintained a sizeable advantage heading into period number two.

Trine led by double figures throughout the second period and extended its lead to as many as 18 points following an 8-0 run which was capped by a layup by Williams off of a Scot turnover.  Alma connected on a three-pointer on its ensuing posession, but the Thunder got the final points of the half on another layup, this time by Dawson, to make it a 35-18 game at the break.

In the third quarter, Trine posted its first 20-point lead at the 5:41 mark thanks to a pair of free-throws by sophomore Shay Herbert (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) that made the score, 45-24.  The lead later grew to 23 points with under a minute to go thanks to a triple by freshman Sophia Kreag (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) en route to the Thunder having a 54-32 advantage after three quarters of play.

The Thunder continued their dominant play into the final period and recorded its largest lead of the game with 24 seconds left on a three-pointer by freshman Kaylee Argyle (Freeland, Mich./Freeland) to make the score, 77-44.  Alma scored on a pair of free-throws in the final seconds to end the scoring, but Trine had already secured the victory and captured a 77-46 victory.

Trine will take on Kalamazoo (Mich.) College in a MIAA matchup at the MTI Center on Wednesday, Dec. 5 as part of a basketball doubleheader with the Thunder men's team.  The Trine men will take on non-conference opponent Great Lakes Christian College at 6 p.m., followed by the women against the Hornets at 8 p.m.
