Thunder Rebound with Sizable Victory Versus Marian

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Trine University women's basketball team came away with the win on day two of the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament at DePauw University 73-38 over Marian University out of Wisconsin. The victory in the team's final non-conference game of the regular season puts the #10 Thunder at 10-3 overall. The Sabres of Marian falter to 2-9 on the season.

Trine used a massive first half to gain the lead and never trailed in the game. In the first quarter, the Thunder outplayed their opponents to a tune of 24-4 and won the second 17-5 to claim a 41-9 halftime edge. Trine held the Sabres to a combined 2-of-22 (9.1%) from the field in the first two periods of play.

Sidney Wagner and Katie Sloneker had a made basket each to start the game and held Marian without a point for over three minutes. A single free throw was all the opposing offense could muster in the first eight minutes of game time, but at that point, Trine had already taken a 17-1 lead. Wagner and Addison Hutson were true from downtown to expand the lead. Abby Sanner, Makayla Ardis and Alyssa Argyle scored to wrap up the first period.

Hutson and Wagner were contributors to a 10-0 scoring run to start quarter number two, with Sanner adding a pair of layups with three minutes to go in the frame. A three-point make by the Sabres at the end of the quarter made it 41-9 at the halftime break.

Katie Sloneker helped weather the storm of a slight Marian run with five points midway in the third. Wagner completed a 7-0 run for the Thunder with five minutes and change remaining in the quarter. An 11-0 outbreak by the Sabres was halted when Hutson buried her fifth three-point field goal of the afternoon and Ardis found Sanner for the quarter-ending score, 56-24.

Younger players on the Trine roster saw significant playing time in the game's concluding period to reach the 73-38 final score. Kearston Stout and Alexis Snodgrass scored late in the going, but a host of players had contributions as well. Jada Rhonehouse, Erin Sherwood, Tiana Maat, Jordan Walters and Macayla McGowan made an impact in rebounding and by dishing out assists in the fourth quarter.

Wagner led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting with three makes from beyond the arc. Sanner (13 points) and Hutson (12 points) scored a combined 25 off the Trine bench. Ardis tied her career-high in rebounds at 11 set the day before while also distributing a team-high five assists. The team collected a season-high 52 rebounds and stole the ball 13 times in total.

The Thunder return to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) action on Saturday, January 7 when Saint Mary's College visits the MTI Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
