Women's Basketball Loses to Gettysburg

MARIETTA, Ohio – In their second game of the Jim Meagle Holiday Classic, the Trine University women's basketball team lost to Gettysburg College 57-36. The 17th-ranked Thunder fall to 9-3 on the year while the Bullets of Gettysburg are 7-3.

After going scoreless for the first three minutes, Katie Tate scored a pair of layups to get the scoring run started. Sidney Wagner and Erin Sherwood added on in the period before a three-point basket by Allison Capouch made it 13-10 at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter began poorly for Trine with nine consecutive points for Gettysburg. The first points in the period did not come until 6:20 into the frame with a layup by Tate. Sherwood and Wagner got the game back to even at 21 apiece, but back-to-back three-balls by the Bullets gave the opponents a 27-21 lead at the break.

Gettysburg took as many as an 18-point edge at 41-23 in the third quarter as the shooting woes continued for Trine. Addison Hutson buried a three to make the score 43-28 after 30 minutes of play. The fight continued in the fourth quarter, but the team could not overcome the hole they found themselves in to fall 57-36.

The Thunder were held to just 25.9% (14-for-54) from the field and 17.6% (3-for-17) from deep. Trine lost the rebounding battle 39-32, but scored all eight second chance points. Wagner led the team in scoring with 10 points and rebounds with seven and was named to the All-Tournament Team for her performances in both games on the weekend.

Trine is back at home on Wednesday, January 3 for a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) against Alma College. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
