Trine Grits Out Victory at Adrian

ADRIAN, Mich. – On Wednesday night, the Trine University women's basketball team secured a road win over Adrian College, 64-53. The Thunder were able to win the fourth quarter by nine to get to 16-6 overall and 10-3 in games contested inside the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). The Bulldogs of Adrian are now 8-13 on the year and 3-10 in conference play.

Sidney Wagner had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, her third of the 2023-24 season. Jada Rhonehouse was also in double figures with 11 points. Katie Tate distributed a team-high four assists. The biggest difference in the game was turnovers. Adrian had 22 miscues that led to 24 Trine points while the Thunder had only 15 turnovers that resulted in 10 Bulldog points.

Adrian won the opening frame 14-9, but Wagner and Rhonehouse scored seven of those points in the first three minutes of game time. An 8-2 scoring run for the Bulldogs over the rest of the period saw Trine net one field goal, a mid-range shot by Addison Hutson.

The visitors fell behind 23-15 at the halfway point of the second, but it was Wagner keeping the Thunder afloat. She would spark an 11-0 run with a jump shot followed by free throws by Erin Sherwood, a three by Allison Capouch as well as a layup and a shot inside by Sherwood. The Bulldogs would bring the score back to even at 27-27 at halftime.

Adrian reclaimed the lead early in the third, but a long range shot by Rhonehouse helped give Trine the edge once more. Tate would put the Thunder ahead 40-34 but the Bulldogs would score late to cut Trine's lead down to two at 43-41 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

The offense would finally get going in the fourth quarter for the Thunder with 21 points. Capouch would bury a second three-point field goal to make it 54-48 with 4:25 to play and Wagner would hit from deep as well to further extend the lead. Sierra Hinds would do the same in the final minute to seal the 64-53 victory.

Trine will challenge #6 Hope College at home on Saturday, February 10 beginning at 3 p.m.
