Women's Golf Wins Purple and White Invitational

GALENA, Ohio-- The Trine women's golf team won the Capital University Purple and White Invitational, held Friday and Saturday on the Royal American Links.

Amy Worthington (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) tied for first in the event, earning individual medalist honors by earning the tiebreaker with Carnegie Mellon's Robin Tan. The tiebreaker was based on a hole-by-hole playoff from round two scores. Based on the results of the first hole, Worthington was declared the winner. She finished with a two-round score of 168, including an 83 in round two. Overall, Thunder golfers earn the team a score of 694. Three Trine golfers finished among the top 10 in the tournament.

Amanda McPherron tied for third, carding a 171 over the course of the two-day event. McPherron averaged nine strokes better than her previous season-average over two rounds. Julia DeBelly (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) placed eighth with an overall score of 178.

Katherine Guertin (Worthington, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) played a stellar round two, carding an 84 to move all the way up to a tie for 13th after finishing round one in a tie for 30th. Guertin's round two score was eight strokes better than her season average. Mikala Freeland (Danville, Ind./Danville Community) rounded out Thunder golfers competing in the event.

Trine will host the Trine University Spring Classic Apr. 10-11 on the home links of Zollner Golf Course. The tournament tees off at 1 p.m. each day.
