Welper Leads Trine Women's Golf to Fourth Place at Spiess Invitational

DEFIANCE, OHIO  --  Sophomore Lyndsey Welper (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) carded a round of 84 strokes to lead the Trine University women's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Jon P. Speiss Memorial Invitational hosted by Defiance College at Eagle Rock Golf Course in Defiance, Ohio.

As a team, the Thunder finished the event with a total of 358 strokes to place fourth overall.  Tiffin University took home the team title with 330 strokes, followed by Siena Heights (Mich.) University in second place with 339 strokes.  The University of Northwestern Ohio rounded out the top three teams with an event-total 351 strokes.

Welper shot a 43 and 41 to end the event with 84 strokes to pace Trine.  Senior Jordan Stevens (Brownstown, Ind./Brownstown Central) was second on the team with an 18-hole total of 90 strokes (41+49=90) and fellow senior Natalie Woodley (Grayling, Mich./Grayling) finished a stroke behind with a 91 (43+48=91).  

Sophomore Mackenna Kelly shot a single-round of 93 strokes (46+47=93) and senior Brooke Johnson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) fired a pair of 47's to finish with 94 total strokes and complete the list of team qualifying scores.

In addition, Trine had three competitors play as individuals in freshman Olivia Phillips, senior Erin Shafer (Albion, Mich./Springport) and sophomore Morgan Barrasas (Hobart, Ind./Hobart).  Phillips posted the lowest score of the trio with a round of 96 strokes (46+50=96).  Shafer ended the day with an even 100 strokes (53+47=100) and Barrasas added a 128 (60+68=128).

The women's golf team will move on to compete in the two-day Kyle Campbell Invitational hosted by Olivet (Mich.) College on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 8-9 at the Medalist Golf Club in Marshall, Mich.  The first round on Friday is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
