ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University women's golf team began the 2018-19 season by hosting the Trine Kickoff Classic at Zollner Golf Course and finished as runners-up.
Trine finished with a single, 18-hole team score of 364 strokes to finish in second place out of seven teams. Grace College took the team title with 332 strokes and Olivet (Mich.) College rounded out the top three teams with 372 strokes.
Freshman Jenna Doumont (Burlington, Ky./Villa Madonna Academy) paced the Thunder individually with a round of 83 strokes and placed fourth overall. Junior Lyndsey Welper (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) was second with 89 strokes and placed in the top-10 in eighth place.
Junior Mackenna Kelly (Angola, Ind./Angola) posted the third lowest score for Trine of 95 strokes and sophomore Olivia Phillips (Muncie, Ind./Muncie) was fourth at 97 strokes. Rounding out the five individuals eligible for the overall team score was freshman Karlee Fackler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Heritage) who carded a round of 101 strokes in her first collegiate tournament.
Also competing as individuals in the event was freshman Becca Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich./Lutheran Northwest), junior Morgan Barrasas (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) and freshman Opal Polk (Peru, Ind./Peru). Baughman shot the lowest round of the trio with 99 strokes, followed by Barrasas with an 118 and Polk shot a single round score of 134 strokes.
Trine will travel to Marion, Ind. to take part in the two-day Indiana Wesleyan Invitational that begins next Friday, Aug. 31. The first round is scheduled to begin on Friday at 2 p.m. at Arbor Trace Golf Course.
