DEFIANCE, OHIO -- Lyndsey Welper (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) placed fourth individually to lead the Trine University women's golf team to a fourth-place showing at the annual Jon P. Spiess Memorial Tournament hosted by Defiance College at Eagle Rock Golf Course in Defiance, Ohio.
As a team, the Thunder finished with an overall total of 348 strokes to finish fourth of eight qualifying teams. Tiffin University came in first with 312 strokes and was followed by Albion (Mich.) College in second with 342 strokes. Siena Heights (Mich.) University finished five strokes back in third place at 347 strokes.
Welper shot a pair of 40's on the front and back nine to post an overall score of 80 strokes to finish in a tie for fourth overall out of 50 golfers and also went on to be named to the All-Tournament Team. Jenna Doumont (Burlington, Ky./Villa Madonna Academy) had the second lowest score on the team with a score of 87 strokes (47+40=87) and finsihed just outside the top-10 in 12th place.
Olivia Phillips (Muncie, Ind./Muncie) shot a 42 on the front nine and followed with a 48 on the back to end the one-day tournament with a score of 90 strokes and placed in a tie for 14th place. Becca Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich./Lutheran Northwest) and Mackenna Kelly (Angola, Ind./Angola) both shot rounds of 91 strokes with Baughman shooting a 43 and 48, while Kelly came in with a 45 and 46. Both players finished in a tie for 16th overall.
Also competing for Trine as individuals were the trio of Karlee Fackler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Heritage), Morgan Barrasas (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) and Opal Polk (Peru, Ind./Peru). Fackler recorded the lowest score amongst the three with nine-hole totals of 51 and 48 strokes for an overall score of 99 strokes. Barrasas carded an 18-holle total of 105 strokes (47+58=105), while Polk got to the clubhouse with scores of 62 and 73 for an overall total of 135 strokes.
Trine is scheduled to travel to Marshall, Mich. to take part in the two-day Kyle Campbell Invitational hosted by Olivet (Mich.) College on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 7-8. The first round on Friday is set to begin at 2 p.m. at The Medalist Golf Course.
