MARSHALL, MICH. -- Junior Lyndsey Welper (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) shot a 79 to lead the Trine University women's golf team at the first Michigan Intecollegiate Athletic Association event of the season at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall, Mich.
As a team, the Thunder shot a team score of 356 strokes and finished in sixth place out of nine teams. St. Mary's (Ind.) College came in first with a team score of 326 strokes and was followed by Hope (Mich.) College in second place at 332 strokes. Albion (Mich.) College was third with 346 strokes.
Welper's 79 was good enough for fourth place individually in a field of 54 golfers. Freshman Jenna Doumont (Burlington, Ky./Villa Madonna Academy) had the second lowest round of the day for Trine at 82 strokes and placed in the top-10 amongst the field in a tie for ninth.
Junior Mackenna Kelly (Angola, Ind./Angola) was third with an 18-hole round of 91 strokes and sophomore Olivia Phillips (Muncie, Ind./Muncie) was fourth at 104 strokes. Freshman Becca Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich./Lutheran Northwest) rounded out the team scores with a round of 106 strokes.
Freshman Karlee Fackler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Heritage) also competed in the tournament and ended the day with a total of 112 strokes.
Trine will travel to Granger, Ind. for the MIAA Jamboree #2 at The Medalist Golf Course on Saturday, Sept. 22. St. Mary's will serve as host of the tournament which is set to begin at 1 p.m.
