Women's Golf Places Fifth at Thomas More Invite

PERRY PARK, KY.  --  The Trine University women's golf team placed fifth at the Thomas More (Ky.) University Spring Invitational hosted at Perry Park Golf Resort in Perry Park, Ky.

The Thunder posted a two-day team score of 709 strokes (359+350=709) to place fourth overall.  DePauw University captured the event with a two-day total of 616 strokes (306+310=616).  University of Pikeville (Ky.) was second with 631 strokes (315+316=631) and Madonna (Mich.) University rounded out the top three teams with 670 strokes (343+327=670).

Trine had a trio of players fire rounds of 88 strokes on the final day of competition in freshman Jenna Doumont (Burlington, Ky./Villa Madonna Academy), sophomore Olivia Phillips (Muncie, Ind./Muncie) and junior Lyndsey Welper (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion).  Doumount finished with the lowest overall score for the Thunder for the two days, firing a pair of rounds in the 80's, and a 36-hole total of 171 strokes (83+88=171).

Phillips and junior Mackenna Kelly (Angola, Ind./Angola) finished in a tie for second on the team with 178 strokes each.  Phillips carded rounds of 90 and 88 strokes, while Kelly improved by six shots on the final day to shoot rounds of 92 and 86 strokes.

Welper was fourth with a two-day total of 182 strokes (94+88=182) and freshman Karlee Fackler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Heritage) was fifth with a tournament-total 193 strokes (101+92=193).

Trine also had one additional player competing as an individual in freshman Becca Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich./Lutheran Northwest).  Baughman shot a total of 95 strokes in the first round on Saturday and then followed with a 94 in the final 18 holes to end the tournament with 189 total strokes.

The Thunder will next compete in a dual match against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent Hope (Mich.) College on Saturday, Mar. 30.  The match will be played at the Ravines Golf Course in Saugatuck, Mich. with the start of the event slated for 1 p.m.
