Trine Wins Match Play Event Against Hope

SAUGATUCK, MICH.  --  The Trine University women's golf team defeated Hope (Mich.) College, 3-2, in a match play format at The Ravines Golf Course in Saugatuck, Mich.

The two teams competed in five individual head-to-head matches with the winner receiving one point towards the overall team score.

All three of the winning matches for Trine needed extra holes to decide the victor.  Freshman Jenna Doumont (Burlington, Ky./Villa Madonna Academy) and sophomore Olivia Phillips (Muncie, Ind./Muncie) both defeated their Hope opponent in 19 holes, one up.  Junior Mackenna Kelly (Angola, Ind./Angola) needed two extra holes to defeat the opposition one up.

"I am extremely proud of our team today," said Head Coach Noah Warren.  "Jenna was down three during her back nine and fought hard to come back and extend her match for a win. On the other hand, Kelly and Olivia were up four, and up two respectively late in their matches. Hope battled back in those two matches to extend them to extra holes. I am very pleased with the way all three of them kept a high level of confidence and focus which enabled them all to come away with victory."

Junior Lyndsey Welper (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and freshman Karlee Fackler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Heritage) both played close matches, but would fall in their matchups, 7&6 and 3&2.

In addition, freshman Becca Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich./Lutheran Northwest) competed as an individual and won her match, 4&2.

"We do not have the opportunity to play in many match play events, so it is a great experience for our team," added Warren.  "Fortunately, we were able to play a match play event last week, and practiced different match play situations leading up to this match. This paid dividends today as we were able to defeat a very talented Hope team."

Trine is scheduled to compete at the Steven Tyler Invitational hosted by Kalamazoo (Mich.) College on Monday, Apr. 8.  The one-day tournament will be played at The Moors Golf Course in Portage, Mich. with a start time of 1 p.m.
