Women's Golf Finishes Third at Kickoff Classic; Welper Shoots Career Low

ANGOLA, IND.  --  Senior Lyndsey Welper (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) carded a career-low score of 72 strokes and finished as the individual medalist to lead the Trine University women's golf team to a third place finish at the Trine Fall Kickoff Classic at Zollner Golf Course.

The Thunder finished with an overall team score of 328 strokes to finish third.  Grace College captured the event with a score of 312 strokes and Olivet (Mich.) College was second at 325 strokes.

Welper's round of 72 led all players included a string of five straight birdies en route to posting her career-best 18-hole score.  Sophomore Jenna Doumont (Burlington, Ky./Villa Madonna Academy) had the second lowest score of 82 strokes and finished in the top-10 overall in a tie for seventh.  She was followed by fellow sophomore Karlee Fackler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Heritage) with 86 strokes and tied for 12th overall.

Freshman Maire Sullivan (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth) and junior Olivia Phillips (Muncie, Ind./Muncie) rounded out the five individuals making up the Trine's first team with rounds of 88 and 93 strokes respectively.  Sullivan's score was good enough to put her in the top-20 in her first collegiate competition in a tie for 17th.

Five other individuals competed to make up the Trine "B" team and was led by senior Mackenna Kelly (Angola, Ind./Angola) who shot a round of 86 strokes and tied for 12th overall among the field.  Freshman Lily Williamson (Colfax, Ind./Western Boone) was second with 93 strokes and senior Morgan Barrasas (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) had the third best score at 95 strokes.

Freshman Reagan Guthrie (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa Area) posted a score of 101 strokes and fellow freshman Anabelle Burkholder (Lima, Ohio/Bath) ended the day with a score of 114 strokes in their first collegiate tournament.

Trine will travel to Marion, Ind. for the two-day Indiana Wesleyan Fall Invitational at Arbor Trace Golf Course beginning next Friday, Aug. 30.  The round on Friday is set to begin at 1 p.m., followed by the final round on Saturday (Aug. 31) at 9 a.m.
