Trine Finishes Third at MIAA Fall Final

BATTLE CREEK, MICH.  --  The Trine University women's golf team finished third overall after the final round of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Fall Final at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek, Mich.

After rain postponed the completion of the first round yesterday, the Thunder wrapped up the round this morning before playing another 18 holes for the second round and totaled an overall score of 685 strokes (328+357=685) to place third out of nine schools.  St. Mary's (Ind.) College was first with 631 strokes (307+324=631) and Hope (Mich.) College was second at 665 strokes (327+338=665).

Overall, Trine will finish fourth in the final MIAA standings to earn a spot in the spring automatic qualifier.  The Thunder finished with a cumulative 2,060 strokes for the four MIAA Jamboree events and the final two rounds this weekend.  Trine earns the spot by a shot over Calvin(Mich.) College who ends up in fifth place with a total of 2,061 strokes.

Sophomore Jenna Doumont (Burlington, Ky./Villa Madonna Academy) posted the top overall score individually for Trine of 167 strokes (78+89=167) and placed in a tie for 10th.  Senior Lyndsey Welper (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) was second on the team with a tournament-total 169 strokes (81+88=169) which put her in a tie for 14th.

Freshman Maire Sullivan (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth) finished in the top-20 with a score of 174 strokes (85+89=174) good enough for 20th overall.  Sophomore Karlee Fackler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Heritage) finished a stroke behind Sullivan with a total of 175 strokes (84+91=175) and placed in a tie for 23rd.

Senior Mackenna Kelly (Angola, Ind./Angola) rounded out the five team eligible scores at 184 strokes (92+92=184) and was tied for 38th among the field.

Competing as an individual was junior Olivia Phillips (Muncie, Ind./Muncie) and recorded rounds of 93 and 92 strokes for an overall total of 185 strokes.

Following the completion of the event, two Trine competitors were named All-MIAA in Doumont and Welper.  Both players were selected to the second team.  Doumont and Welper become the first Trine women's golfers to earn All-MIAA accolades since the 2016-17 season.

The Thunder conclude the fall portion of the 2019-20 season schedule with the MIAA Fall Final.
